Afrik Planet respects your privacy.

This Privacy Policy explains how Afrik Planet, operated by Egrum LLC (“Afrik Planet,” “we,” “us,” or “our”), collects, uses, stores, shares, and protects information when you use our website at afrikplanet.com, our mobile applications for iOS and Android, and other services that link to this Privacy Policy (collectively, the “Services”).

Afrik Planet is a global social networking platform where people can create profiles, connect with others, share photos and videos, communicate by message and by voice or video call, broadcast live, and discover content and communities from around the world.

While Afrik Planet has a strong connection to African communities and the global African diaspora, the platform is open to people from all backgrounds and countries.

By using Afrik Planet, you acknowledge the practices described in this Privacy Policy.

A note on how Afrik Planet is built. Most of the infrastructure that handles your content — media storage and processing, live video and calling, translation, and email delivery — runs on servers operated by Egrum LLC rather than being handed to outside companies. Where we do rely on an outside provider, we identify it in Section 4.

1. Information We Collect

The information we collect depends on how you use Afrik Planet and the features you choose to use.

A. Account Information

When you create or maintain an Afrik Planet account, we may collect information such as:

• your name;
• username;
• email address;
• telephone number, if you choose to add one;
• password or authentication credentials;
• profile photograph;
• date of birth;
• country or region;
• language preferences;
• account settings; and
• other information you choose to add to your account.

Passwords are stored using industry-standard one-way hashing and are never stored as readable text.

Your date of birth is used to confirm that you meet the minimum age requirements described in Section 11 and to offer birthday features. Your full date of birth is not shown publicly. Where you choose to display a birthday on your profile, the day and month may be shown without the year.

Your telephone number, where provided, is not displayed on your public profile.

B. Profile Information

You may choose to provide information for your public or private profile.

Depending on the features available, this may include:

• display name;
• username;
• profile photograph;
• biography and headline;
• the country or town you are from, and the country or town you live in;
• interests;
• languages you speak;
• links;
• follower and following information; and
• other information you voluntarily provide.

Some profile information may be publicly visible depending on your settings and the design of the Service. If you set your account to private, your content is visible only to followers you approve.

C. Photos, Videos and User Content

Afrik Planet allows users to upload, create, publish, and share content.

We therefore collect and process content you submit, including:

• photographs;
• videos;
• audio and sound attached to posts;
• captions;
• posts;
• comments;
• replies;
• reactions;
• likes;
• reposts;
• stories or similar temporary content;
• profile media; and
• other content you choose to share.

We may process media to provide the Services, including resizing, compressing, transcoding, creating thumbnails or previews, mixing audio, storing, transmitting, and displaying your content.

Automated safety scanning. Images and videos uploaded to Afrik Planet are automatically scanned by software to detect nudity and sexual content. Text you post may be automatically checked against a content-safety service to detect material such as sexual content involving minors, threats of violence, and hateful content. This scanning happens automatically, without a person reading your content, and is described further in Section 8. Content that is flagged may be restricted, removed, or referred to a human reviewer.

D. Social Connections and Activity

We may collect information about how you interact with Afrik Planet and other users.

This may include:

• accounts you follow;
• users who follow you;
• likes and reactions;
• comments;
• shares and reposts;
• content you view, and how long you spend viewing it;
• the amount of time you spend using Afrik Planet each day;
• searches;
• accounts or content you interact with;
• blocked or muted accounts;
• accounts you add to close friends or favourites;
• reports you submit;
• content preferences; and
• other activity within the Services.

We may use this information to operate social features, to keep the Service reliable, and — where personalisation is enabled, as described in Section 3 — to improve recommendations and discovery.

E. Messages and Communications

Afrik Planet provides direct messaging, group messaging, voice calling, and video calling.

Standard messages. For standard direct and group messages, we process the information necessary to deliver them, including who communicated, when, and the message itself. Message contents are encrypted while stored on our servers. We do not read your private messages for advertising or personalisation. Message contents may be accessed in limited circumstances where reasonably necessary to investigate a report of abuse, respond to a threat to someone's safety, maintain security, enforce our policies, or comply with applicable law.

Secret chats. Where you use a secret chat, messages are end-to-end encrypted. The keys remain on the participants' devices, and Egrum LLC cannot read the contents of those messages. This means we are also unable to produce their contents in response to a report or a legal request, and we cannot recover them if you lose your device.

Voice and video calls. Calls are carried over infrastructure operated by Egrum LLC. We process information needed to connect and maintain the call, such as who participated, when the call took place, and technical connection quality data. We do not record your one-to-one or group calls.

We do not represent private communications as public content merely because they are transmitted through Afrik Planet.

F. Live Broadcasts

Afrik Planet allows users to broadcast live video, including broadcasts hosted by more than one person.

Live broadcasts are recorded. When you start or join a live broadcast as a host, the broadcast is recorded and stored on our servers so that it can be made available as a replay. Recording is a standard part of the live feature and cannot currently be switched off for an individual broadcast. If you do not want a broadcast recorded, do not broadcast.

You may ask us to delete a recording of your own broadcast at any time by writing to support@afrikplanet.com. Recordings are also removed after a period of time, and are deleted if the broadcast is removed for a policy violation.

If you appear in, comment on, or send a reaction or gift to someone else's live broadcast, that participation may be captured in the recording.

Please consider this before broadcasting or joining a broadcast.

G. Country and Region Information

Afrik Planet may ask you to select your country or region, and the town you are from or live in.

This information may be used to:

• display a country or regional indicator where applicable;
• customize your experience;
• allow you to discover content from selected countries or regions;
• provide regional feeds;
• improve recommendations;
• determine applicable features or legal requirements; and
• understand how Afrik Planet is used in different regions.

Afrik Planet does not collect precise GPS location for its core social networking features.

Country or region information selected by a user should not automatically be interpreted as verified citizenship, nationality, ethnicity, heritage, residence, or current physical location.

H. Device and Technical Information

When you access Afrik Planet, certain technical information may be collected automatically.

This may include:

• device type;
• operating system;
• browser type;
• application version;
• device identifiers;
• IP address;
• network information;
• language;
• time zone;
• crash information;
• diagnostic information;
• referring pages; and
• technical logs.

We keep a record of sign-ins to your account, including the IP address and device information used, so that you can review account activity and so that we can detect unauthorised access.

This information helps us operate, secure, troubleshoot, and improve Afrik Planet.

An IP address may provide a general indication of a user's location. We do not treat this as precise GPS location.

I. Notifications

If you enable push notifications, your device provides a notification token that allows Apple or Google to deliver messages to your device on our behalf. You can turn notifications off at any time in your device settings.

J. Information You Provide to Us

We collect information you voluntarily provide when you:

• contact customer support;
• report a user or content;
• submit an intellectual property complaint;
• appeal a moderation decision;
• participate in surveys;
• provide feedback;
• communicate with us; or
• otherwise submit information directly to Afrik Planet.

K. Website Visitors and the Launch List

You can use parts of afrikplanet.com without an account.

If you submit your email address to our launch or waiting list, we collect that address and use it solely to notify you when Afrik Planet becomes available. We will not use it for unrelated marketing without your consent, and every message includes a way to unsubscribe.

If you send us a message through the contact form on our website, we collect the details you provide in order to respond to you.

2. How We Use Information

We may use information collected through Afrik Planet to:

• create and maintain accounts;
• provide profiles;
• display and distribute User Content according to applicable settings;
• operate feeds;
• provide photo and video sharing;
• enable social interactions;
• provide messaging, calling, and live broadcasting features;
• connect users with other users;
• recommend content or accounts;
• provide country and regional discovery;
• personalize the user experience;
• process searches;
• maintain account security;
• detect spam, fraud, abuse, and unauthorized activity;
• scan content automatically for prohibited material;
• enforce our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines;
• investigate reports and complaints;
• provide customer support;
• troubleshoot technical problems;
• improve performance and reliability;
• develop new features;
• conduct analytics;
• comply with legal obligations;
• protect the rights and safety of users, Egrum LLC, and others; and
• communicate important information about Afrik Planet.

Legal bases for processing

Where the GDPR, UK GDPR, or a similar law applies to you, we rely on the following legal bases:

Where we rely on consent, you may withdraw it at any time. Withdrawing consent does not affect processing that already took place.

Where we rely on legitimate interests, you have the right to object, as described in Section 13.

3. Personalization and Recommendations

Afrik Planet may personalize feeds, recommendations, search results, suggested accounts, and other experiences.

To do this, we may consider information such as:

• accounts you follow;
• posts you view and how long you view them;
• videos you watch;
• content you like or react to;
• searches;
• comments and other interactions;
• country or regional selections;
• language;
• content popularity; and
• other activity on Afrik Planet.

The purpose is to help users discover people, conversations, and content that may be relevant to them.

Current status. Interest-based personalisation is switched off by default. Where it is enabled, you will be told, and you will be able to turn it off in your settings. Your feed will still work with personalisation off — it will be ordered by the accounts you follow, your country or region, and how recent a post is, rather than by inferred interests.

Personalising a feed does not produce legal effects concerning you and is not used to make decisions about your access to the Service. Decisions that may restrict your account are covered in Section 8.

4. How Information Is Shared

We do not make all personal information publicly available simply because you have an Afrik Planet account.

Information may be shared in the following circumstances.

A. With Other Afrik Planet Users

Information you choose to make public or share with other users may be visible to those users.

Depending on your settings and the features available, this may include:

• your name;
• username;
• profile photograph;
• biography;
• country or regional indicator;
• public posts;
• photos and videos;
• comments;
• followers and following;
• likes or reactions; and
• other public activity.

Users should consider carefully what information they make public.

B. With Service Providers

Most of the infrastructure that processes your content is operated by Egrum LLC on its own servers, including media storage and processing, live video and recording, voice and video calling, translation of post captions, and email delivery. Your content is not sent to outside companies for those functions.

We currently rely on the following outside providers:

• OpenAI, L.L.C. (United States) — text you post may be sent to OpenAI's content-moderation service to check it for prohibited material such as sexual content involving minors, threats of violence, and hateful content. Only the text being checked is sent. Your name, username, and account identifiers are not sent with it.
• Apple Inc. and Google LLC — where you enable push notifications, these companies deliver notifications to your device. Where you buy something through an app store, they process that transaction under their own privacy policies.
• Internet infrastructure and connectivity providers — including data centre, network, and content-delivery providers who transmit and host data on our behalf.

Where we engage a provider to process personal information on our behalf, we require them by contract to process it only on our instructions and to protect it appropriately.

If we add or change a provider in a way that materially affects how your information is handled, we will update this Section.

C. For Safety and Security

We may share information when reasonably necessary to:

• investigate fraud;
• prevent abuse;
• address security threats;
• protect users;
• enforce our Terms;
• investigate serious policy violations; or
• protect the rights, property, or safety of Afrik Planet, Egrum LLC, our users, or others.

D. Legal Requirements

We may preserve, access, or disclose information when we reasonably believe doing so is required or permitted by applicable law, legal process, court order, subpoena, governmental request, or other lawful authority.

We may also disclose information when reasonably necessary to establish, exercise, or defend legal claims.

E. Business Transactions

If Egrum LLC or Afrik Planet is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, bankruptcy, sale of assets, or similar business transaction, information may be disclosed or transferred as part of that transaction, subject to applicable law.

5. Sale of Personal Information

Afrik Planet does not sell your personal information, and does not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising, as those terms are defined under the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended, or under comparable United States state privacy laws.

We have not sold or shared personal information for those purposes in the preceding twelve months, and we do not sell the personal information of people we know to be under 16 years of age.

If this ever changes, we will update this Privacy Policy before the change takes effect and provide the notices and opt-out choices those laws require.

6. Advertising

Afrik Planet does not currently show advertising.

If we introduce advertising, sponsored content, or promoted content, we may use information such as general interests, activity, country or region, language, and other permitted signals to provide or measure it.

We will not use special categories of personal data — such as information revealing race or ethnic origin, religious beliefs, health, or sexual orientation — to target advertising.

We will not show advertising based on profiling to people we know to be minors.

We will update this Privacy Policy and provide any additional notices or controls required by law before advertising is introduced.

7. Cookies and Similar Technologies

Our website and Services use cookies, local storage, software development kits, and similar technologies.

At present we use only what is strictly necessary to operate the Services, such as:

• keeping you signed in;
• remembering your preferences and language;
• providing core functionality;
• maintaining security and preventing fraud; and
• diagnosing technical problems.

We do not currently use advertising cookies, third-party analytics, or cross-site tracking technologies.

If we introduce non-essential cookies or similar technologies, we will ask for your consent first where the law requires it, and we will provide a way to change your choice at any time.

8. Automated Content Scanning and Moderation

Afrik Planet uses automated systems to help keep the platform safe.

What is automated. Images and videos are automatically scanned for nudity and sexual content. Text may be automatically checked for prohibited material, as described in Section 4B. Automated systems also help detect spam, fake accounts, and coordinated abuse.

What can happen as a result. Content identified by these systems may be given a warning screen, limited in distribution, removed, or held for review. In serious cases — for example, apparent sexual content involving minors — an account may be suspended automatically.

Your right to a human review. You will not be subject to a decision that significantly affects you based solely on automated processing without a route to a person. If your content is removed or your account is restricted, we will tell you what happened where we are able to, and you may appeal. An appeal is reviewed by a member of our team, not by software. You may appeal in the app where an appeal option is offered, or by writing to support@afrikplanet.com.

Reporting. You can report content or accounts from within Afrik Planet. Reports are reviewed by our moderation team.

9. Data Retention

We retain personal information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide Afrik Planet and fulfill the purposes described in this Privacy Policy.

Retention periods may depend on:

• the type of information;
• how long an account remains active;
• the reason the information was collected;
• security requirements;
• fraud prevention;
• legal obligations;
• dispute resolution; and
• enforcement requirements.

In general:

• content you delete is removed from the Service immediately and purged from our systems within 30 days;
• notifications and similar transient records are removed after approximately 90 days;
• sign-in records are kept for a limited period for security purposes;
• live broadcast recordings are kept so they can be offered as replays, and are removed after a period of time or earlier at your request; and
• records we are required to keep by law are retained for the period the law requires.

When information is no longer reasonably necessary, we may delete, anonymize, or otherwise dispose of it in accordance with applicable law.

Some information may remain temporarily in encrypted backups after deletion, and is overwritten in the ordinary course of backup rotation.

10. Account and Content Deletion

You can delete individual posts, photos, videos, comments, and messages within Afrik Planet at any time.

You can delete your entire Afrik Planet account from inside the app, in Settings, without contacting us and without needing to explain why.

If you have already uninstalled the app, you can request deletion of your account and associated data at:

When an account is deleted, we delete or de-identify associated personal information as described in Section 9, subject to the exceptions below.

Certain information may be retained where reasonably necessary for:

• security;
• fraud prevention;
• legal compliance;
• resolving disputes;
• enforcing agreements;
• protecting users;
• responding to legal requests; or
• maintaining necessary records, including records relating to accounts removed for serious safety violations.

Content previously shared with or redistributed by other users, and messages you sent to other people, may remain visible to those users.

11. Data Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards designed to protect personal information.

These measures include access controls, authentication measures, encryption of traffic in transit, encryption of stored private messages, end-to-end encryption for secret chats, security monitoring, and other protections.

However, no internet service, application, database, or electronic transmission method can be guaranteed to be completely secure.

Users are responsible for protecting their passwords and account credentials.

If you believe your account has been compromised, contact us promptly at support@afrikplanet.com.

Where a personal data breach occurs and the law requires it, we will notify the relevant supervisory authority and affected users within the timeframes the law sets.

12. Children's Privacy

Afrik Planet is a general-audience service and is not directed to children.

You must be at least 13 years old to use Afrik Planet. If you live in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you must be at least 16 years old, or such lower age as your country permits for consent to information-society services, and in any event at least 13.

Afrik Planet is distributed through the Apple App Store and Google Play, which apply their own age ratings. The age rating that applies where you live may be higher than the minimum age above, and may change from time to time. Where it is higher, that rating governs whether you can download Afrik Planet.

You may choose to add a birthday to your profile, which we use for birthday features. Adding a birthday is optional and we do not verify it.

We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under these ages. This includes compliance with the United States Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child below the applicable minimum age, we will delete the information and disable the associated account.

Parents or legal guardians who believe that a child has provided personal information to us may contact support@afrikplanet.com and we will act promptly.

13. Your Privacy Choices

Depending on the features available, you can:

• update profile information;
• change account settings;
• control who can see your profile and posts, including making your account private;
• delete posts, photos, and videos;
• manage followers and connections;
• block and mute users;
• control who can message you;
• manage notifications;
• adjust content and personalisation preferences; and
• delete your account.

Additional privacy controls may be introduced as Afrik Planet develops.

14. Your Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have legal rights concerning your personal information.

These may include the right to:

• request access to personal information;
• request correction of inaccurate information;
• request deletion;
• obtain a copy of certain information in a portable format;
• object to certain processing, including processing based on legitimate interests;
• restrict certain processing;
• withdraw consent where processing is based on consent;
• opt out of certain advertising or data-sharing practices where applicable; and
• appeal a decision we make about a privacy request.

These rights are subject to applicable law and may have exceptions.

We may need to verify your identity before fulfilling certain requests. We will respond within the time limits set by applicable law.

We will not discriminate against you for exercising your privacy rights.

15. United States State Privacy Rights

Residents of certain U.S. states may have additional rights under applicable state privacy laws.

Depending on the law and whether it applies to Afrik Planet, these rights may include:

• knowing what categories of personal information are collected and why;
• accessing personal information;
• correcting personal information;
• deleting personal information;
• obtaining certain information in a portable format;
• opting out of the sale or sharing of personal information;
• opting out of targeted advertising;
• limiting the use of sensitive personal information; and
• appealing decisions concerning privacy requests.

As stated in Section 5, we do not sell or share personal information, and we do not use sensitive personal information for purposes that require a right to limit.

You may make a request through an authorised agent where the law permits. To exercise any of these rights, write to support@afrikplanet.com.

16. European Economic Area, United Kingdom and Similar Privacy Laws

Where the General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”), UK GDPR, or a similar law applies, Egrum LLC is the controller of your personal information.

The legal bases on which we process personal information are set out in the table in Section 2.

Eligible users have rights of access, correction, deletion, restriction, objection, and data portability, as described in Section 14, and the right to withdraw consent where processing is based on consent.

You have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. In the United Kingdom, this is the Information Commissioner's Office. In the EEA, it is the supervisory authority in the country where you live or work.

You may contact us about any of these rights at support@afrikplanet.com, and we will respond within the period the law allows.

We have not appointed a Data Protection Officer. If our processing changes such that one is required, we will appoint one and publish their contact details here.

17. International Data Transfers

Afrik Planet serves users worldwide and is operated by Egrum LLC in the United States.

As a result, your information is processed and stored in the United States, and may be processed in other countries where our infrastructure providers operate.

Data protection laws in those countries may differ from those in your country, and may not provide the same level of protection.

Where we transfer personal information out of the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we rely on appropriate safeguards, which are the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses and, for the United Kingdom, the UK International Data Transfer Addendum, together with additional technical and organisational measures where needed.

18. Public Information

Afrik Planet is a social networking platform.

Information you make public may be visible to a broad audience and potentially to people outside Afrik Planet.

Public information may potentially be:

• viewed;
• shared;
• copied;
• downloaded;
• screenshotted;
• indexed where applicable; or
• redistributed by other people.

You should avoid publicly posting information that you wish to keep private.

19. Third-Party Links and Services

Afrik Planet may contain links to third-party websites, applications, products, advertisements, or services.

This Privacy Policy does not govern the privacy practices of independent third parties.

We encourage users to review the privacy policies of third-party services before providing personal information to them.

Afrik Planet is distributed through the Apple App Store and Google Play. Your use of those stores is governed by Apple's and Google's own privacy policies.

20. Changes to This Privacy Policy

Afrik Planet will continue to develop, and our privacy practices may change.

We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes to:

• Afrik Planet features;
• technology;
• data practices;
• legal requirements;
• security practices; or
• our business operations.

When changes are material, we will provide notice where required by applicable law, and where the change requires your consent we will ask for it before it takes effect.

Notice may be provided through Afrik Planet, by email, on afrikplanet.com, or through another appropriate method.

The date at the top of this Privacy Policy indicates when it was most recently updated.
